Jacks or Better Video Poker is aptly named, as the minimum requirement
for a winning hand is a Pair of Jacks. This is the best video poker
game for beginners and seasoned players alike.
To choose a good paying game check the the full house and flush payouts
for a single coin bet. The best pay out come from the 9/6 machines
where you will be awarded pay outs of 9 coins for a full house and
6 coins for a flush.
Also review the royal flush pay out. Ideally look for a non-progressive
game that pays out a minimum of 4,000 coins for a royal flush when
you are max betting 5 coins.
Also, it is recommended that, generally speaking, you always play
max coins. You should always be playing to win the top prize. If you
can't afford to play dollars, play quarters. If you can't afford to
play quarters, play nickels. Don't cheat yourself out of a full-pay
jackpot by wagering with cheap money.
The pay table you see listed is referred to as a 9/6 machine. Spoken,
it would be ninety six. Which means that a Full House returns 9 coins
per each invested, and a Flush pays out 6. Focusing on this portion
of a pay schedule is an excellent way to determine what you're up
against. Don't be surprised to find Jacks or Better games which return
as little as 6/5 or as much as 10/7.Is it always better to play a
9/6 machine instead of a 8/5 or a 6/5? On the surface it would seem
so, and all the experts will tell you to never play anything less
than a 9/6. And we agree ... so long as you are playing Video Poker
for five or six hours a day, at least one day a week all year long.
If you're only going to be playing for a few hours over a long weekend,
luck will be such a large deciding factor in winning or losing that
the type of machine isn't going to make a lot of difference. Also,
what good is a 9/6 machine if you never see a Full House? How good
is a 6/5 machine if Flushes are a common occurrence? Would you rather
play a 9/6 machine which produces a Full House every 95 hands, or
a 6/5 machine which gives you a Full House every 60 hands? Figure
it out for yourself. We suggest you play them all. Keep playing the
ones which provide value for your investment. Avoid the ones that
don't.
Jacks or Better Video Poker Tips:
- Don't play the low payout 7/5 machines you'll find at airports,
laundromats, or grocery stores. The house odds are just too high.
- Always max bet 5 coins. In the long run the hitting of a 5 coin
Royal Flush Jackpot is what makes winners over the long run in the
game of video poker.
- Never keep a "kicker"-an extra high card along with a pair.
- You will never draw to an inside straight unless you have three
or four high cards Four high cards? Realize that J-Q-K-A is an inside
straight. Only one rank of card can complete it - the 10.
- You never keep three cards to a straight or flush, but you do
keep three cards to a straight flush in some circumstances.
- When you start using the full strategy table, take it at its word.
Don't defy the chart because you need to hit a "big" hand. Don't
break up a full house or two pair because you're itching for a four
of a kind.
We have a page of Jacks
or Better Strategy which also includes a strategy chart on what
you should be holding in the standard 9/6 pay games.
