Texas Hold'em is the most popular of all the poker games. Its the game that has contributed hugely to the popularity of poker in general.

In a Texas Holdem poker game up to 10 players are dealt 2 cards each. Then over the course of 3 betting rounds, 5 community cards are dealt in the middle of the table.

Every player can use these 5 community cards and there 2 hole cards to make a poker hand. The player who ends with the best 5 card poker hand wins.

With the video poker version of Texas Holdem, you deposit one coin and the game deals you and 4 other pretend players 2 cards each (hole cards). Your hole cards are exposed on the screen. You can choose to fold if you don't like your starting hand, or if you want to carry on and see a flop, you deposit another coin and 3 community cards are dealt on the table. These 3 cards may well make you a good poker hand or you may want to see another card to try and improve your hand, or complete a draw of some sort. You then decide whether you want to see a 4 th card, the turn, for which you need to deposit another coin. Finally you can deposit a 4th coin if you want to see the final river card which is when you will see the other 4 players cards. If you have the highest ranking poker hand you are paid according to the payout table above.

If you tie with any other players the payout is split between the number of winning players..

If you fold before depositing the 4th coin, the 4 other players hands are shown on the screen. You recieve your bet back if your hand would have won outright.

This kind of game would be popular with those players than also enjoy playing live Texas Holdem. Its interesting because you have decisions to make on every betting round as to whether to deposit another coin.

Key differences between the video poker version and the real live game are:

  • Other players never fold. They always see the last card (showdown).
  • Therefore there's never any bluffing in the hope they will fold.
  • There's no raising.
  • Theres no checking, so therfore no chance of free cards (if all players checked).

Strategy

You continue betting if you think your hand has a good chance of being the best hand at showdown, or bet another coin if you have the pot odds to improve to the best hand by showdown.
