- Lawmakers Fighting Gaming Commission
Many of the lawmakers in Alaska are trying to keep a bill off the
ballot that would allow Alaskans to vote on whether or not they want a
gaming commission. They don’t want to lose control over gambling
decisions, and thus are trying to keep voters from taking them out of
the loop.
They want to be able to make the decisions as to whether or not
gambling expansion is needed, and if a commission is elected they
would lose that ability. An initiative is already scheduled for the
August primary, which would take the power out of the Department of
Revenue’s hands – as they currently control it.
Many in the state are upset by this move as they feel that although
there are many things that should not be decided by voters, the
commission is one that should be. Many feel that the people who
currently run things are too political, and have lost sight of what is
best for the people instead of their pockets.
Whether or not Alaska should have a lottery, or video poker, card
rooms, etc. should be left up to the people as they are the ones who
will be living with the consequences of the expansion. However,
lawmakers are trying to push through an Amendment that would negate
the vote should voters be allowed to decide.
