- Medford Video Poker Mess Continues
Former Buscombe Sheriff Bobby Medford’s trial starts today with jury
selection. His attorney has been talking strategy and North Carolina
is listening. It looks like he might call Buscombe County Sheriff Van
Duncan to the witness stand as well as District Attorney Ron Moore.
Medford’s attorney, Stephen Lindsay, is planning on filing a list of
45 potential witnesses next Monday, and it includes some names you
would not have expected to see on the list. They include former
deputies, a retired banker, the Sheriff’s Attorney, and a businessman.
It also lists Special Agent Rick Schwein – who was the supervisor for
the Asheville FBI office. Schwein will not be able to attend
personally as he is currently working out of Yemen, but Lindsay has
deposed him and the video can be used in court.
Medford is charged with running an illegal gambling ring, and for
accepting bribes. The complete charges are: interfering with commerce
by threat or violence, attempt and conspiracy to commit mail fraud,
money laundering, and intimidation of witnesses and conspiracy to
defraud the United States.
Of those that have been arrested in conjunction with the video poker
mess, 24 of them have already pleaded guilty.
