Video Poker 247
- No Jail Time for Video Poker Addict
Diata Demanje Rhodes has gotten one of the biggest breaks in her life.
The 37 year old has been found guilty of stealing to feed her video
poker addiction, but will not face jail time for the crime.
Rhodes is a former Multnomah County employee who had been stealing
money from the petty cash account at her job. When confronted, she
pled guilty in February to theft charges.
Her lawyer argued that she was in an unstable part of her life, and
that she was very depressed over a breakup with her boyfriend, an
abortion and the passing of her dog – so she should not serve jail
time. Her lawyer said that all of these things occurred before she
started stealing to support her video poker habit, which is why the
court should show leniency.
The judge did show compassion for Rhodes and sentenced her to five
years on probation, 160 hours of community service and entrance to a
gambling treatment program. She is also ordered to repay $39,000 to
the county.
