Video Poker 247
- Bill Will Allow Gambling Expansion
The South Carolina Baptist Convention is upset about a recent bill
that would allow for gambling for churches and non-profits. They say
that the bill would allow for an amazingly large expansion of gambling
in the state and they feel that this would be a mistake.
The group says that they opposed the initial expansion of video poker
within the state, and they say that it is obvious now how bad that
turned out to be for the state. They say that their fight against the
lottery and video poker is now not done as they must fight this new
bill as well.
The bill states that non profits and churches would be allowed to
offer cards and dice games if it is for fundraising and is of “limited
duration.” The bill has already passed the subcommittee, and is now
off to the Senate Judiciary Committee. It is expected to pass with
very little problems as one of the members of the committee, Senator
Glenn McConnell, is also a sponsor of the bill.
The convention says that this is a slippery slope that they are headed
down and that if they “open the door” to this kind of gambling they
will end up just like they did after video poker was approved. They
say that the bill is vague at best and that they will be allowing
gambling in its clearest sense. They are concerned that it looks as
though they will be able to open video poker and gambling halls with
the current wording.
