Video Poker 247
- Video Poker Ring Top Story of 2008
Many residents in North Carolina, especially Western North Carolina,
are wondering what will become of the law enforcement officials that
have been accused of assisting, and in some cases running, illegal
video poker machines. Some are accused of taking cash payouts to
protect them, while others actually ran video poker businesses.
North Carolina had made the video poker games illegal, and owners and
operators were to remove the games from their businesses. However,
some businesses kept their video poker machines and paid off sheriff’s
and their deputies to keep it quiet.
Former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford seems to be the top name
in the news, as he and his deputies are accused of protecting the
video poker machines from the rest of the law and the state. They are
all currently sitting in jail awaiting trial for their role in the
video poker ring.
However, now federal officials say that there are several other
counties that have law enforcement officials as well that will be
facing charges. They say that the video poker ring involved many more
people than they originally thought. Federal authorities say that
there are many more indictments to be handed down for extorting
protection money from video poker operators as well as a handful of
other misuses of power.
They say that since video poker games were banned in July, millions
have been made from illegal gambling. According to police Henderson
Amusement had brought in more than $10 million over the past seven
years from their video poker machines alone.
