Video Poker 247
- There Were No Warning Signs
According to the District Attorney’s office, the video poker gambling
corruption that had been going on at the Buncombe County Sheriff’s
Office was a complete surprise. DA Ron Moore said that he had no
inkling of it, and that he had no evidence of it either.
Moore said that he had not seen the evidence of gambling corruption
during the 12 years that Bobby Medford had been there, and that
perhaps some of the people that he had surrounded himself with were
not of the best caliber, but that does not mean he is participating in
illegal video poker scandals either.
Medford, who will remain in jail until his trial in March, is accused
of running an illegal video poker operation and that he moved the
money through the sheriff’s office. Those that worked around Medford
said that they had heard rumors and there had been some speculation
that he might have something on the sly, but nothing was ever
confirmed to them.
According to the federal indictment, Medford was very careful about
who he allowed into his inner circle and who he told about the video
poker operation. At times his deputies that were within that circle
would even pick up his cut of the video poker winnings while in
uniform and then bring it back and move it through the sheriff’s
office.
The video poker operators paid Medford thousands upon thousands of
dollars so that they could continue running their illegal video poker
games. They basically paid him hush money and he allegedly took it.
