Video Poker 247
- Another Defendant Turns Against Medford
It seems you really don’t know who your friends are until you get into
a tight jam, and then people start showing their true colors. At least
that is the way it must seem to former Buscombe County sheriff Bobby
Medford. Those that have had charges brought against them in the
illegal video poker ring that was being run are running to the other
side as fast as they can.
One of his former top lieutenants, John David “Johnny” Harrison, 66,
has agreed to testify against Medford. He has pled guilty of
interfering with commerce by threat or violence for his part in the
illegal video poker scheme.
Harrison is the first of the “inner circle” to turn against Medford,
but you can be assured that he won’t be the last. His other two
defendants, Ronnie Eugene “Butch” Davis and Capt. Guy Kenneth Penland
are also facing charges stemming from the illegal video poker
operation.
Both are accused of taking bribes and protection money from the
illegal video poker operators, and are facing trial next month on the
25th. Harrison admitted to taking money from the video poker operators
for five years to help sponsor his boss’ political campaigns. He
admits he knew that the money was going to Medford and Penland, not
the political campaign. So far, 24 people have pled guilty to the
video poker scam.
