Video Poker 247
- Fund Raiser Illegal
According to North Carolina law, all gambling is illegal. Not only
that but it is considered a Class 2 misdemeanor – and it doesn’t
matter whether it is for charity or not. However, this brings up a lot
of problems for the charities in the state as they use poker games,
etc. to bring in much needed income.
Many feel that Governor Mike Easley has gone overboard in his
dismissal of video poker and gambling in the state. They say that he
is comparing video poker to charity poker and they are just not the
same thing.
The problem is that Nourish International runs an annual Hold’em for
Hunger poker tournament, and they have had to cancel their event this
year. The group raises money to reduce poverty and hunger is less
developed countries. They are applying for an exemption, but so far
they have not heard anything.
Many feel that to not grant the exemption would be a true disservice
to the charity and to all of the people that they help. The tournament
brings in about $25,000 in revenue, which goes to good use. Saying
that their charity poker game is the same as a bunch of people losing
their money sitting in front of a video poker machine is simply
ridiculous.
