Video Poker 247
- Leicester Gambling Raid
According to the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, a
raid on a former Leicester sports bar turned up illegal video poker
games as well as a slew of other gambling accoutrements. Allen Page,
District Supervisor with the ALED said that illegal gambling was going
on in the establishment.
ALE and Buncombe sheriff’s deputies raided the Legends sports bar and
discovered three video poker machines, cash, cards, and poker chips.
Page said that the establishment had been the subject of a six month
investigation.
Officers took $3,571 in cash from the establishment, and said that no
arrests were made but they were considering filing charges. The
decision had not been made yet as to who would be charged and what
they would be charged for. Page said that this would be up to District
Attorney Ron Moore.
Chad Nesbitt, operator of the club said that the property and the club
were owned by his grandfather, Jim Rhew. However, they both maintain
that the gambling was not what it was portrayed as. They say that it
was “just a bunch of guys in their 50s, 60s and 7os, playing cards,
eating pizza and watching the race.”
Nesbitt also said that the money taken was from the pockets of those
present, not from the tables and that this was merely an attempt at
intimidation. He said that he had called for an investigation into the
district attorney’s office and that this was retribution.
