- Maryland Looking to Ban All Video Poker and Bingo
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. and House Speaker Michael
E. Busch have never gotten along on the subject of slots in the state
of Maryland. However, there is one thing they do agree on and that is
the video poker and bingo games that have been popping up across the
state. Both want the games to be gone, and are looking at passing
legislation that would make that happen.
They say that the number of video poker and bingo games that have
appeared in bars and restaurants across the state is ridiculous and
they are taking their residents’ money hand over fist. They are
introducing legislation that would make them immediately illegal
within the state.
Miller said that they were nothing more than slot machines, and that
they had “sprung up almost like a disease” within the state. The
governor has already agreed to sign the legislation if it makes it to
his desk, as he feels that in November the residents of the state will
be able to vote on slot machines and how many they want to see. These
other machines are simply making money for those that own them at the
expense of their residents.
Slot machines are currently illegal in Maryland, but that could change
come November when residents have a chance to vote on it to decide.
Other gaming devices such as video poker and bingo are allowed as long
as the proceeds go towards charitable organizations. However, the
companies that own the machines get a cut as do the owners of the bars
and restaurants that host them.
