Video Poker 247
- And Then There Were Two…
Slowly the number of people on former Buscombe County Sheriff Bobby
Medford’s side is dwindling so that now there are only two that are
still looking at the charges and have not reached a deal. Just this
afternoon, his former Lt., Ronnie Eugene “Butch” Davis pled guilty to
all eleven charges against him.
Jackie Shepherd has already pled guilty to his part in the illegal
video poker business, and that brings the total to 25 that have pled
regarding the video poker case. The video poker raid has swept Western
North Carolina, and many were shocked at the level of deceit and
duplicity that is involved in the case.
Shepherd is facing five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He is
also giving up the Cherokee Trading Post and Billy Jack’s Flea Market
as these were video poker locations. They also dropped the charges
against his son and stepson.
Davis is looking at up to 95 years in prison. Both men could be called
to testify against Medford and his former reserve Capt. Guy Kenneth
Penland. They are facing charges of taking bribes and protection money
in regards to the illegal video poker operation.
Businesses paid Medford and his lieutenants the money because they
would get protection from the police so that they could continue their
video poker operations. They would also be warned of upcoming raids,
etc. from the police and were able to keep their businesses secret.
