- Holland Not Guilty of Video Poker Charges
Macon County Sheriff Robbie Holland has been exonerated by Jerry
Pennington – a top official at Henderson Amusement. Holland’s name had
come up as one who had received bribes in former buncombe County
Sheriff Bobby Medford’s video poker trial.
When his name was mentioned, people were outraged. They just couldn’t
believe that someone like Holland would be involved in an illegal
video poker gambling ring. It would seem that they were right.
Holland had maintained his innocence, stating that he had nothing to
do with all of it. However, until Pennington came forward and said
that the testimony of Anna Deaton was a mistake, officials were
looking his way.
Pennington says that his assistant got the code wrong and that he
didn’t have anything to do with it. He says that the code that Deaton
had said as Holland was for the Haywood County Sheriff.
For his part, Holland had held a press conference stating that he was
“aware of the testimony” but knew that in the end he would be cleared
of all wrong doing. He said that neither he nor his sheriff’s office
was for sale, nor would it ever be.
Medford is accused of taking bribes to allow video poker game
operators to make illegal payouts from their machines. They were
supposed to regulate the video poker machines per North Carolina law.
