Video Poker 247
- Records Show Video Poker Payoffs
The trial continues for former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford
and his deputies as even more evidence comes to life. It seems that
Anna Deaton has testified and her account of what was going on has
greatly differed from Medford’s account.
Deaton was the bookkeeper for Henderson Amusement, Inc., one of the
companies implicated in the video poker gambling ring, and she says
that she assisted with Jerry Pennington’s expense reports. Pennington
would use a code on his reports that was an “XXXX” and “XXX” that was
for the Buncombe County Sheriff’s office.
He would use the code to get reimbursed for payments that he made to
Medford for his protection for their illegal video poker gambling
ring. The company made more than $14 million in North Carolina off of
the illegal video poker machines.
Other records had Medford’s co-defendant, Capt. Guy Kenneth Penland on
them with a code of “G” or “Judge” to let them know that these were
the times they paid him for his protection. They paid him $450 a week
and he registered video poker machines at the Sheriff’s office.
Deaton was responsible for turning the handwritten notes into expense
reports that went to the owners of the Henderson Company. All of the
owners of the company have pled guilty in the illegal video poker
debacle.
