- Book Review: Money for Nothing
You would think that winning the lottery would be your heart’s desires
come true, and you could be right. However, a new book that has been
released by Collins called “Money for Nothing: One Man’s Journey
Through the Dark Side of Lottery Millions” shows you that it ain’t all
it’s cracked up to be.
Edward Ugel writes a poignant tale of one man who took advantage of
those who won the lottery for millions and how it led to his downfall
– that ultimately he would have been better off had he not gotten
involved in the lottery at all. Ugel writes that he was working as a
sales manager and sales man for one of those companies that buys
annuities from lottery winners. People sell them because they want to
get all of their money now instead of having to wait for it, but do so
at a loss of a large portion of their funds.
However, Ugel, used the money that he made off of these people to
become addicted to video poker. His paychecks disappeared time after
time into a video poker addiction that lasted for years. He says that
he is fully aware that his ability to “capitalize on the recklessness
of lucky customers” who lost their money hand over fist is ironic
considering he was doing the same thing only with video poker
machines.
He says that he would watch people losing round after round on the
video poker games and then get excited when they won some small
amount. He says he would think that they were so sad taking the money
that he handed them on the tickets that they cashed in – and taking
that money and putting it right back into the machines. Little did he
know that eventually he would be one of those video poker addicts
doing the exact same thing.
