- Kanawha County Recount Emboldens Opposition
Those that are responsible for the vote being so close in Kanawha
County’s special election for table games think that they have a real
chance to get gambling out of the state completely. Table games
opponents are using the momentum that they have gained over these past
few weeks to push for making all gambling illegal in the state of West
Virginia.
They believe that if they get the word out on the dangers of not just
video poker or table games, but on slots and gambling as well, that
they will stand a good chance at getting state residents to overturn
gambling laws that have already passed in the state. They say that the
Christian and social conservatives have been heard, and they think
that many people have not had a chance to truly be heard on the issue.
With a vote difference of 343 for the table games they think that they
will be able to use the vote closeness to get people awakened in the
state about the dangers of playing and allowing video poker, slot
machines, table games, etc. and they can get a referendum on the
ballot to make them all illegal.
Mia Moran-Cooper has been one of the most vocal opponents of adding
table games to the existing slots, as she was once the head of the
program for problem gamblers in the state, so she has seen it first
hand how destructive it can be. She says that no matter what poison
the gambler chooses, video poker, slot machines, etc. it always ends
up the same – in misery and bankruptcy.
She paid for the recount out of money that was donated from the state
Council of Churches, and if the vote does not change she will have to
ante up. She is obviously hoping for a more brighter future.
