Video Poker 247
- Milford Adds Poker
The New Hampshire Charitable Gambling (NHCG) organization is looking
to convert twelve of the 20,000 square feet of the IGA grocery store
in Milford to a River Card Room. The group is taking their idea to the
Milford Planning Board next Tuesday, and they believe that they have a
pretty good chance of winning since it is for charity.
However, some residents are not only confused about the addition of
gambling to their city, they are angered at the prospect of it. Texas
Hold’em has continued to grow in popularity and the NHCG is just
trying to take advantage of that growth in interest, but others say
that they are simply exploiting the idea of gambling in their
community.
The room would have 25 poker tables and would employ 82 people. They
also say that they would be able to raise almost $350,000 the first
year alone for local charities. However, even though charitable
gambling has been legal for the past ten plus years, residents don’t
want what they consider to be a large parlor in their town.
Some cite the fact that Douglas Bianchi, a former selectman for the
town was arrested for operating video poker machines at the VFW that
paid out winnings. They say that if the video poker machines were
illegal, why are the poker tables legal just because the money goes to
charity. The idea behind keeping the video poker games illegal is so
that they can protect their residents from the evils of gambling, but
the new poker room will be exposing them to that very same thing.
